The problem

What was not working

Twenty-two years of work sat behind a slideshow of eleven photos with no captions. Buyers could not tell a $900k remodel from a $4.2m ground-up build, so every enquiry started from zero — and half of them were for jobs the crew would never take.

02 /

The position

Who this has to attract

Not the cheapest builder in the county. The one you hire when the site is difficult and the house has to look like it grew there. Owners aged 50+, second or forever home, architect already engaged or about to be.

The idea

The creative direction

Treat the portfolio like an architectural monograph, not a gallery. Every project is filed by terrain, orientation and material — so the site itself argues that this builder thinks about land first. High-contrast serif, enormous photography, almost no colour, and a long slow scroll that mirrors the pace of the work.

The system

The rules that make it hold together
Typography
Fraunces at optical size 144 for display, drawn back to weight 340 so the thin strokes stay hairline at 12rem. Archivo at 300 for body, generous 1.75 leading. No condensed type anywhere — nothing here is in a hurry.
Colour
Piñon smoke, unbleached linen, a single hand-forged brass. Colour appears four times on the entire site.
Photography
One image per screen, minimum 1600px tall, uncropped verticals. Shot in the last hour of light. Never a collage.
Grid
12 columns, but the content only ever uses 7 of them — the asymmetry is the composition.
Motion
1.05s ease-out on everything. Images scale from 1.06 to 1.00 as they enter. Nothing bounces, nothing snaps.

Cañada Builders is an invented business. The figures above are the targets this design is engineered against, not reported results—because inventing client outcomes would be the least honest thing on this website.
